Foot Patrol

Mill Creek Citizen Patrol; Taking Steps towards Community Engagement
Posted on 11/26/2019

Members of the City’s Citizen Patrol are taking to the streets of Mill Creek Town Center as a way to establish a positive presence and deter illegal activity. Wednesday, Nov. 20 was the first day of this new foot patrol program.

This newly implemented initiative is part of a pilot program aimed at volunteers who have completed the Police Citizens Academy. Outside of deterring illegal activity, the foot patrol program also aims to strengthen relationships between the City, Mill Creek Police Department, local businesses and residents.

On the first outing last week, Citizen Patrol introduced themselves to Town Center merchants providing them with City contact information and generally, letting them know what role Citizen Patrol plays in supporting the Mill Creek Police Department. Foot patrol is giving priority to those businesses that are affected by the upcoming holiday related community events, such as the Santa Parade on Saturday, Dec. 7.

“We spoke with a handful of owners and employees of Town Center businesses and all were very pleased to see us on foot patrol,” said Joel and Eileen Goverman, the City’s newest Citizen Patrol members. “Perhaps the most successful conversations involved discussing parking, crowd management and street closures with businesses that will be heavily impacted by upcoming events.”

In addition to driving community outreach, Citizen Patrol members assist the Mill Creek Police Department by enforcing disabled parking violations, conducting City park checks and providing traffic control.

Looking to the future, Citizen Patrol is excited to continue expanding community outreach efforts and providing visibility throughout Mill Creek via foot and vehicle patrol. They are also looking for more members of the community to join in on their efforts.

To become a member of the Citizen Patrol, volunteer members must first attend the City’s Police Citizens Academy. To learn more about the upcoming Citizens Academy in March 2020, please visit www.cityofmillcreek.com/policecitizensacademy.
